Darrowby Goldens is in upstate New York. This is a small show kennel with over thirty years experience. Multi purpose Goldens with the true Golden temperament are the main purpose of this kennel. Soundness is stressed, and a very specific type is produced.

In 1964, Sallie Lawler (now D’Asaro) got her first Golden. He was a wonderful introduction to the breed even if he did bring many challenges! Part of that was a teenager not knowing how to train a one year old spoiled dog, and part of that was a one year old spoiled dog! Erasmus of Rotterdam was the first of a now long line of Goldens that moved to New York with Sallie in 1973 (okay, so there is always still one back at the Shagbarks in Illinois!)

Evolution of knowledge and desired type has resulted in a kennel with a very distinct English look integrated with the look of Goldens in the US in the sixties (a look reminiscent of Aureal Woods dogs). This is not an overdone Golden, expression is quite soft, and coat is full, not exaggerated in length or setter silky. Proper size and soundness are requisite. Pretty heads are a must. One of our new acquisitions, a New Zealand champion (NZ CH Fantango Guns N Roses - known as Tahn - in co-ownership with Ranchosierra Goldens) with OFA excellent hips at age five, exemplifies the pretty head. Our dogs are busy being therapy dogs, breed winners (five new champions so far this year and a Champion from our kennel in New Zealand with 10 CCs!!!), field trial dogs, family hunting dogs, obedience dogs (the most recent CD had a 194 1/2 average with a 198.5 HIT) and a TV miniseries star!

Dennis and Sallie pretend to be in charge, but the true ruler is Ranchosierra Disco Volante. Disco has several champion puppies, a HIT daughter, and is Den’s constant companion.

Can Ch Darrowby’s Archie Dill (Tinker) are residents of Darrowby. One of her daughters, Can Ch Darrowby’s Counselor Troi, resides with Junior Handler Emily Horton in Maine. Troi has fantastic movement, is a moderate size with a lovely head and expression.

Darrowby’s Dov Sono (Arf) is the mother of the wagonload of youngsters. Tahn (NZ CH Fantango Guns and Roses) is the sire. Cam (Darrowby’s R-Sierra Camemberra) spilled out of the wagon and stayed with Sallie and Dennis.

Darrowby’s A Simple Twist of Fate was in the wagon and went to a show home with Steve Roberts.

Darrowby’s RSierra High Flyer (Cessna) took his twin engines out to Blaine Washington near Vancouver,B.C. to entertain Michelle Vinall and her family (he was 3rd in the sweepstakes at the National although he was barely six months old!).

Tia is in Saratoga with the Tittertons and her brother Arlo. Chase (Darrowby’s Steeplechase) is in Aspen making a family very happy with his antics. Bailey is in Connecticut dividing his time between his pond and his family. Brie represents all that is Golden in South Carolina and is the bane and best buddy of her older Golden housemate from New Zealand. Pumpkin runs Stoneykill Farm for his two owners in Chatham, and Darrowby’s Vintage Port is a star in beginning obedience and, well, see for yourself.

All of our litters have similarly diverse and wonderful homes. We provide lifelong technical support to all owners.

Producing show dogs is something done by many people - raising dogs with the temperament, soundness and working ability we demand requires a great deal more time, effort, research, knowledge, luck, and tears. Those who don't work out are placed in loving pet homes. We don't breed the dogs that don't meet our standards. Quality of this type has to come from very solid foundations. We feel very fortunate that Michelle shared Disco with us. Her dam Flight (Aust Ch Santamaria Flight imp As) was one of the prettiest Goldens I have ever seen, with all of the other attributes we require.

All breeding stock is cleared for hips, eyes and heart. Our dogs are rated by OFA for their hips, and BVA sees X-rays on imports as well. The BVA hip grading system provides so much more information on hips that this may be done on all dogs in the future. Certified ophthalmologist clear eyes annually, and a cardiologist examines our puppies for SAS before they leave home. All adults have cardiac clearances as well. Puppies are not frequent here as we devote a ludicrous amount of time to raising and socializing a litter.

(Whoever heard of a whelping box stenciled to match the wallpaper, and puppies who have their own miniature agility course in the family library so they are exposed to small steps, tunnels, rock piles, pools, tires etc.?)

We weigh all kids daily and check temperaments constantly to assure no one is trying to be a bit shy (hardly ever a moment’s problem!) or too big for their rear feathers. Microchips are implanted before anyone goes home. We have been told it is easier to adopt a child than be an approved home for one of our Goldens - we are flattered by the thought.

By the time we temperament test our pups, the socialization usually means very even results. Letters, Emails and phone calls about growing and grown Darrowby dogs sound like copied reports. The universal desire to please and the high level of trainability are constant themes.
